EVERYONE IS WELCOME
Runkle had a special treat on Friday when former New England Patriot Martellus Bennett came to read to the 4th grade in the Martin Sleeper Library. Mr. Bennett, a spokesperson for the Read to a Child literacy and mentoring program, read “Hey AJ – It’s Saturday!”, a story he himself wrote. Mr. Bennett’s passion for literacy, engagement, and the welfare of children was on full display, and our students and staff will remember both the message and the man for a long time. Many thanks to the parents who helped make this visit happen!
Also this week, our graduating class took part in a three-day End-of-Eighth Experience, where students with their teachers celebrated their time at Runkle, which will be coming to an end with their Graduation on June 21. On Wednesday, the group hit the rapids on the Deerfield River in Western Massachusetts, which had just received six inches of rain prior to our visit. This created a most exhilarating whitewater rafting experience, which required much teamwork, communication, and cooperation to successfully traverse 13 miles of the Category III rapids on what was a picture-perfect, sunny, early summer day. On Thursday, following a whole-grade breakfast in the cafeteria, the group went into Boston, for lunch and shopping at Faneuil Hall Marketplace, followed by taking in a matinee performance at the Boston Opera House of the Broadway show Wicked, a “fractured fairy tale” musical based on The Wizard of Oz. On Friday, the group conquered the numerous mental and physical challenges of the “real-world gaming environment” known as Boda Borg, in Malden. By all accounts, the three days provided a wonderful capstone experience for our graduating class.
We have two exciting end-of-year activities for the whole school this week. Thursday night is the return of the Runkle School Variety Show in our MultiPurpose Room, and Friday, starting at lunchtime, will be Runkle Field Day, which is busily being planned by the Runkle Student Council. More information will be shared in the coming days!
Congratulations to parents Leigha Cuniberti, Kristan Singleton, and Julie Young, who have been elected to serve on the Runkle School Council, as well as staff members Ania BIgda, Teresa Gallo-Toth, and Kim Munroe.
