EVERYONE IS WELCOME — YOU are Runkle

This past Tuesday at the PTO Meeting and Coffee, Literacy Specialist Annie Connors and Literacy Coach Shoshana Jacobs presented an overview of Literacy at Runkle. Ms. Connors and Ms. Jacobs outlined our comprehensive, whole school literacy model known as the Literacy Collaborative. Essential components of the Literacy Collaborative include partnership with Lesley University, a coherent research-based instructional model (Readers and Writers Workshop), a safety net of intervention (Leveled Literacy Intervention), school-based literacy coaches (Ms. Jacobs for K-2, Ms. Gray for 3-5, and Rachel Hayashi for Grades 6-8), long-term school-based professional development, and a school-based Literacy Leadership Team. Also emphasized during this presentation was the critical role of independent reading for all developing readers, and how parents can support their children in this area. In addition to Ms. Connors and Ms. Jacobs, the Runkle Literacy Team includes myself, Vice Principal Donna Finnegan, Literacy Specialists Amy Sweeney and Kristin Gray, Librarian Teresa Gallo-Toth, Special Educator Angela Galanopoulos, and classroom teachers spanning our K-8 school (Kindergarten teacher Ashley Haese, Grade 3 teacher Hannah Cote, Grades 7-8 ELA teacher Ania Bigda).

The presentation was very informative for the parents in attendance, and there was talk of having a larger presentation at the beginning of next school year for the whole parent community. The slides from the presentation, which contain greater specifics on what reading and writing looks like within our classrooms, are available on runkle.org.

We recently received the results from the National Spanish Exam, which an impressive 19 of our eighth grade Spanish students elected to take earlier in the school year. The Runkle crew earned five gold, five silver and five bronze medals on the 2017 National Spanish Exam. Ms. Boyle held a special mini awards ceremony in our Peace Garden for all participants. Congratulations to all!

Lost & Found items will be on display in the Gymnasium Lobby until 3:00 on Wednesday afternoon. Any unclaimed items will be donated to charity!
