Hello, everyone. I hope you have all enjoyed the spring-like vacation!
Multipurpose Room Goings-on: Over the break we replaced the old chair-lift mini-elevator in the Multipurpose Room with a handicap-accessible ramp, which is located along the far-wall of the room leading up to the stage. We will also be purchasing additional flags to display in the Multi to celebrate the growing number of countries of origin of our students. Our STEM-themed Techsploration assembly for Grades 3, 5, and 6 will be occurring in the Multi on Monday morning. And our 7th and 8th grade Musical, HONK, Jr. will be performed in the Multi on March 30, April 1, and April 2.
The Thursday prior to the break was Runkle’s International Spirit Day, where students and staff dressed in apparel representative of our family’s heritage. The morning’s announcements were delivered in a multitude of languages, and our K-2 Morning Meeting featured greetings in numerous languages from several of our middle school students. Kindergarten parent and Brookline Cranes for Peace organizer Ben Kelley updated the students on our cranes’ ‘flight’ to Washington, DC, and their landing places at the MLK memorial as well as schools and community centers throughout the land. The memorable assembly concluded with those in attendance treated to a video celebration of international child prodigies performing “Heal the World” (viewable at www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6d
6Yo3DwVI (http://www NULL.youtube NULL.com/watch?v=h6d6Yo3DwVI)). Watching this stirring performance I was reminded of John F. Kennedy’s quote, “Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.”
Congratulations to our 5th and 6th grade Math League team, under the leadership of 6th Grade Mathematics teacher Dale Cramer, which finished in 3rd place in the February town-wide Math League competition. There is one more meet for the season, scheduled for Wednesday, March 15. Also in March, our 7th and 8th grade MathCounts team will participate in the state championships. Representing Runkle will be 8th graders Sam, Ben, Marco, and Varun. March will also bring with us our 2nd annual March MadChess competition for middle school students, which will take place in the Main Lobby during Lunch and Recess. Signup sheets will be posted in the main lobby later this week.
