Dear Families,

We had a very special K-2 Morning Meeting this past Thursday, led by Vice Principal Donna Finnegan.  Ms. Finnegan began the meeting with a “What’s the news?” greeting with a circle of several first graders on the stage before sharing her own news: we are putting together a “There’s No App for Your Lap” bulletin board, made up of pictures of parents reading to their children, in the lower lobby!  Please email or hand-deliver any pictures to Donna and help encourage all of us to read with our children!  Ms. Finnegan then read to everyone Owen and Mzee, a remarkable real-life story about the friendship that developed between a baby hippopotomas, separated from his herd following a tsunami, and a 130-year old giant tortoise.  The story’s affirming message of friendship knowing no bounds was felt by all in attendance.

With temperatures having plunged this past week, I would like to remind parents to make sure their children have sufficient clothing for outdoor recess.  Generally speaking, we have outdoor recess whenever we can!  Please know that if the temperature is in the teens Ms. Finnegan and I will monitor wind and sun conditions before making a determination, and we may make the decision on a cluster-by-cluster basis. (Single digits, however, will keep us all inside.)

I would like to (belatedly) thank the Runkle Student Council for the spirted assembly that they organized for the entire student body prior to the break!

I have greatly enjoyed re-connecting with everyone following the Winter Vacation.  I ask all families to please do your very best to contain your vacation travels to the actual vacation periods as outlined on the School Calendar. Students’ absences are felt by them, their classes, and the school community as a whole.

Best wishes to all,

Jim Stoddard
